VCU Tabbed as Favorite to Win the Conference in the A-10 Preseason Poll

PITTSBURGH-- With Atlantic 10 basketball just on the horizon, the preseason poll and awards have been released, as VCU is currently tabbed as the favorite to repeat its success and win the A-10 in back-to-back years.

They are led by a new head coach, Phil Martelli Jr, who is expected to handle these lofty expectations after taking Bryant University to March Madness twice during his time there.

Saint Louis is expected to take a big jump this season, as they are a very close second, being just one vote behind VCU. They are led by senior center Robbie Avila, as the Billikens look to try to dethrone the Rams.

Dayton is looking to maintain the pressure at the top of the A-10 as they are projected to finish third in the poll this season.

George Washington is tabbed as one of the biggest risers this season, being projected to finish fourth, as they had a big increase in hype after a busy offseason in the transfer portal, capped off by getting former Duquesne guard Tre Dinkins III, who was an A-10 Preseason Second Team.

Loyola Chicago is expected to stay around the top of the A-10 again as they are projected to finish fifth this season, led by Drew Valentine.

They are led by Miles Rubin, who was not just on the Preseason All-Defensive Team but was also just one of three players in the A-10 to average two blocks a game.

The biggest surprise of the A-10 Preseason Poll is George Mason, after making the conference championship game last season, is projected to take a big step back this year, as they are projected to finish sixth.

Saint Joseph's is also expected to take a big step back after losing Eric Reynolds II to the draft as the Hawks are projected to finish seventh this season.

St Bonaventure and Duquesne are projected to stay where they finished last season at eighth and ninth, respectively.

Richmond is expected to take a small step forward as they are projected to finish tenth this season under the veteran leadership of senior center Mike Walz, who is on the A-10 Preseason Third Team.

Davidson is expected to roll around the same spot again this year at 11.

The preseason poll is capped off by Rhode Island expected to finish 12, La Salle at 13 and Fordham expected to finish at the bottom of the preseason poll.

Duquesne led as far as 21 points up against Queens College, but when you saw the end of the second half, the Dukes had to go into overtime.  The Dukes took down the Royals at home, in overtime, as coming up clutch was the name of the game.  “I knew once we went into overtime, you know, the game was kind of in our hands. You know, we built for this,” Hugley IV said. “We practiced like this, you know, we practice against each other hard every day, you know, just going to war with each other every day.” Players like Jakub Necas had two big moments, the first being a three-point shot with 1:31 left in the second half. The second was a layup as the first bucket in overtime for the Dukes to give them the lead 77-75, in which they would not relinquish the rest of OT.  “I'm just trying to be myself, you know, and just play basketball and be healthy as much as I can on the court.” Necas said.  The shots were not falling for the Dukes for a while as they went 0-9 for three-poi...

Duquesne is 30-35 all time against the Rams with them hoping to take the season series over them.  A key thing on both sides will be this magic number of 70 with Rhode Island only averaging 66.6 points during conference play.  Duquesne's offense has gone a bit cold down the stretch struggling against Dayto...

St Bonaventure vs La Salle Recap

As the clock hit 0 St Bonaventure's head coach Mark Schmidt will have to wait at least one more day before his season comes to a close as they dominate La Salle in the first contest of the A-10 Tournament winning with a final score of 99-80.  The game was decided quickly in the second half as they opened up after smothering La Salle for the final four minutes of the first half keeping them scoreless and down by nine the Bonnies opened up the second half with a 13-5 run that essentially ended the Explorers season.  The losses of Jerome Brewer Jr. and Jaeden Marshall were definitely felt for La Salle as the offense severely struggled along with the defense.  The main star for the Explorers was Rob Dockery who led the charge with 31 points in a double-double to end his season.  While the shooting for La Salle was slow in the first half it picked up with a resilient bounce back performance with Ashton Walker going 5-for-12 in the second half finishing with 15 points....
