The End of the Seattle Seahawks
Today to end
the year 2023 was the final blast right through the hearts of the Seattle
Seahawks fanbase as they lost an embarrassing matchup against the Pittsburgh
Steelers 30-23 at Lumen Field to end any hope the Seahawks had of making the
playoffs.
The play was
abysmal from missed tackles, an inability to convert a third-down and no
pressure generated against Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph all night.
This has
been a recurring trend and Seahawks fans ask yourselves how tired are you of
this terrible play?
The Steelers
had a season-high 476 yards of offense after losing to teams like the Cardinals
and the Patriots, each had just two wins.
This must be
the year where the coaching staff has some turnover between Defensive
Coordinator Cling Hurt, Offensive Coordinator Shane Waldron and Head Coach Pete
Carroll. You cannot sugarcoat losing five of your last seven games. That is a collapse
of unbelievably frustrating proportions.
In a game
where the Steelers running backs Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren averaged 4.9
yards per carry running through the Seahawks' weak defense the entire match.
The MO to
beat the Seahawks the last two years has been simple have a decent offensive
line and run through Seattle with occasional third-down conversions.
The main
problem is the fact that this goes deeper than the defense as the offense continues
its inconsistent sputters with multiple failed third downs and an inability to
score in the red zone which have been the same issues that have plagued the Seahawks
last season and this one.
This goes
right back on Shane Waldron who has continued to waste the talent on the roster
that most would dream of having with terrible play calls and long developing
routes even though they were facing two elite pass rushers in T.J. Watt and
Alex Highsmith.
While Geno
Smith played well completing 23-for-33 passes for 290 yards and a touchdown he
also missed a wide-open Tyler Lockett on a deep out route and held onto the
ball too long on the lone turnover for Seattle being a fumble by linebacker
Nick Herbig which sealed the loss for them.
Lastly what cost
them was early in the game after the one forced turnover on the first drive for
the defense led to the Seahawks' first offensive drive, they stalled out at midfield
on a fourth and 1 and they punted. They could’ve tried to go for it and set the
tone the same way the Steelers did but it led to a bad punt of only 25 net yards
and the Steelers would then march down on a 14 play 75 yard touchdown drive
which set the tone for the rest of the game.
While the Seahawks
season isn’t over mathematically, it’s over mentally for the fan base as at
halftime the Packers are killing the Vikings 23-3 and playing the lowly Bears next
week that they own lifetime to end the season.
While
Seattle can win against the Cardinals and get some pride, they will lose out on
a tiebreaker at 9-8 and management must ask if this is the answer going forward
and I no longer think the answer to that question is yes.
Team defense
has stunk the last three years, and the offense has been good all of once since
COVID hit, 2022, so things need to change instead of coasting to a winning
season with no postseason success and being stuck in the same hamster wheel of
mediocrity ironically mirroring the team that they lost to this week.
